    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum gap between handrails?

For access ramps that have handrails, the distance between these safety features should be about 1,000 millimetres wide. This provides the ramp with sufficient space to accommodate mobility aids such as scooters and wheelchairs.

Ramps are required to have passing spaces that are at least 1,800 millimetres wide and 2,000 millimetres long. These added spaces allow people in wheelchairs to travel at the same time in opposite directions.

What height do you need a handrail?

In Australia, at least one side of a stairway or an access ramp is required to have a proper handrail. According to the Australian Standards, the height of the handrail must be over 865mm from the nosing of the stair steps. Ideally, its height from the floor or the surface of the walkway should be between 900 millimetres and 1,100 millimetres.

For landings that are over a meter above the ground, a barrier or balustrade is required to prevent accidental falls. This barrier, which can also be a guardrail, is required to be at least 1,000 millimetres tall.

How many stairs before a handrail is required in Australia?

Like landings and platforms, staircases that are over 1 metre from the ground should be equipped with a handrail. In properly built or regulation-compliant staircases, this height equates to four risers and three treads.

Do I need a handrail for three steps?

Staircases that have more than two steps generally require at least one handrail, especially if they exceed a height of 1 metre. Stairs that are less than a meter wide can only have one handrail. However, for wider staircases, handrails on both sides are usually required.

Do outdoor steps need a handrail?

Regulations regarding the installation of handrails apply to staircases and steps located inside and outside a structure. This means that the requirements for handrail specifications are applicable for both interior and exterior staircases and steps.
